The Difference Between Cleaning, Sanitizing and Disinfecting ๐Ÿ’กโš™๏ธ

Difference-Cleaning-Sanitizing-and-Disinfecting

After covid19, people realized how important is to protect your organization members (no matter what kind of facility you run) from bacteria, illness, and infection.

Unfortunately, thereโ€™s a lot of confusion around cleaning programs, mainly about the differentiation of concepts, such as disinfection, cleaning, and sanitizing.

Here is a breakdown of what each of the names implies:

๐Ÿงน Cleaning: the process of removing dirt, dust, crumbs, and germs from objects or surfaces. It is usually completed using soap, detergent, or solvent in addition to water. On its own doesnโ€™t kill the germs or remove bacteria, but it is essential. Lastly, it is recommended to perform it before sanitizing and disinfecting to improve the effectiveness.

๐Ÿงค Sanitization: is either done using chemical products or devices (such as a dishwasher) and lowers the number of germs and bacteria on surfaces and objects, to safe levels according to public health standards/requirements.

๐Ÿฆ  Disinfection: is one of the most reliable ways to stop germs and infections from spreading. Their chemicals kill 99.999% of bacteria and viruses from surfaces. Make sure these can be found on the EPAโ€™s N-List.

We recommend developing and following a plan that includes a set of written standard operating procedures for cleaning and clear guidelines for when to sanitize and disinfect. Provide information and train your crew.

Finally, evaluate your plan. Get feedback from the staff product users and from those at spaceโ€™s applied.
